Alexanderplatz construction site | Pitfalls of the underground

The major construction sites at Berlin’s Alexanderplatz seem to be stuck underground. The building ground is complicated. Here, in the former center of East Berlin, is the city’s largest subway station. One track of the U2 line has already sunk: commuter traffic! The film reveals the difficulties that urban high-rise projects sometimes have to contend with. Although the first milestones have been reached, the engineers are still battling with the pitfalls of the underground.

Alexanderplatz construction site | Construction fences for eternity?

High-rise buildings have been under construction at Alexanderplatz since 2020 – but not a single floor has yet risen above street level. Unforeseen events and problems with investors have led to delays or standstills. Instead, construction fences are causing resentment among residents and visitors.
For example, construction is at a standstill on the high-rise building right next to the ALEXA shopping center. Just a few meters away, the French investor COVIVIO is battling with a crumbling subway tunnel that sank significantly during civil engineering work at the end of 2022. In a complex process, the builders are injecting a special cement mixture under the U2 station to stabilize the structure from the imperial era. Construction of the planned skyscraper can only begin if this project is successful. Work on the construction site at the GALERIA department store has also come to a standstill due to a change of ownership in the middle of the construction work.
Only the former Haus der Statistik is making rapid progress. The Mitte tax office is due to move in here in 2024. The future façade of the building can already be viewed as a true-to-original model, as can a first model office.
The third episode of the long-term observation of the construction sites at Alexanderplatz offers insights into deep pits, dilapidated tunnels and reveals what is going on behind the construction fences of the ambitious projects at one of the capital’s most historic and popular locations.
